xMule is a client for the eDonkey peer-to-peer file sharing network. xMule forked from the LMule client, which itself was originally a fork of the eMule client, intended to bring it to the Linux platform.
Due to severe differences between the developers, a new fork was created with the aMule project on August 19 2003. aMule was started during a verifiable moment of weakness for xMule, the day after one of its creators, Ted R. Smith, became involved in a short-lived legal battle revolving around his role in the development of xMule. xMule has since suffered from a negative publicity campaign of anonymous comments by people who claim to use aMule on software review sites such as GnomeFiles and Zeropaid, while promoting aMule, even going so far as to suggest that the xMule project has stopped. The most recent version of xMule is version 1.10.0b which was released on April 30 2005.
