XDK

- Microsoft Xbox Software Development Kit (XDK) is a video games construction kit for the Microsoft gaming system, Xbox. It consists of a compiler and other software, documentation, and a debug Xbox console.
The API was developed jointly between Microsoft and NVIDIA (whose chips were used to power the Xbox graphics). The Xbox API is similar to DirectX version 8.1, and is considered easy to learn by Windows C++ programmers.

A retail Xbox will only run software that has been digitally signed by Microsoft, who control all Xbox releases. Modified consoles can play unsigned code, but license holders are not permitted to publish any material created by the XDK, and content can be traced back to the license holder. All XDK compiled software contains Microsoft's property, and cannot be lawfully distributed without a license.
A retail Xbox can be modified to act like a debug console, and an illegal copy of the XDK is available on the internet. There is a large open source Xbox software scene who release source code rather than incriminating software; software is distributed by the warez scene.
