X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is the third installment of the X-Wing computer game series, although it is not a regular part of the trilogy.

Technically superior than its two predecessors, XvT runs on Windows, requires a Joystick (the others could be played with mouse as well), features a CD audio soundtrack, supports high resolutions, brings texture mapping to the ship models of the in-flight game engine, includes multiplayer options, and a sophisticated pilot and mission selection system which tracks the points and awards the player accomplishes. The player also has the ability to choose squadron that he wants to particapte in (eg. either the Y-Wings that disable a ship for capture, or the X-Wings that support them), ship and armament).

Response to the game, on the other hand, considered it infamous for being the only part of the series designed exclusively for multiplayer and/or personal practice only; it lacks a storyline, coherent scenarios, and cutscenes. Totally Games realised that strong storyline was the main reason the earlier games succeeded.

Expansion pack

An expansion was released in order to fix what much of the fanbase considered missing: apart from new battles and missions, Balance of Power featurs a Rebel and an Imperial campaign of 15 missions with cutscenes that advance the story.

  • "Spreading the Rebellion": The evacuation of a base and attack against the Empire, capture of an Imperial Interdictor Cruiser, etc. The campaign ends with an assault on the Super Star Destroyer Vengeance.
  • "Imperial Task Force Vengeance": A member of the elite Avenger squadron under the leadership of Admiral Senn. The player fights in missions, which are very simular to the story-line as Rebel's campaign. The campaign ends with the destruction of the Rebel factory.

The pack also adds B-Wings and other various craft to the game; craft which were lacking from the original game.

The Collector Edition

A cut-down version of X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was re-released as part of the X-Wing Collector Series, which also contained the Collector's CD-ROM versions of the first two games. In this edition, X-Wing and TIE Fighter are retrofitted with the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter graphics engine, which uses texture mapping instead of Gouraud shading.
