Windows Scripting Host
|
The Microsoft Windows Scripting Host is distributed and installed by default on Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. It is also installed if Internet Explorer 5 (or a later version) is installed. It provides scripting capabilities far superior to batch files.
It is language-independent in the sense that it can make use of different Active Scripting language engines. By default it interprets and runs plain-text JScript (.JS files) and VBScript (.VBS and .VBE files). Users can install different scripting engines to enable them to script in other languages, for instance Perl. Language independent filename extensions WSH and WSF can also be used.
Almost anything that you can do with your computer can be automated using a script file. Although the Windows Scripting Host a powerful tool, certain viruses make use of its features. Many people recommend disabling it (or using an antivirus program that blocks scripts) for security reasons.
An easy way to disable the Windows Scripting Host is to remove (or re-name) its executable file, which is wscript.exe.
