Basics
WebWorks Publisher is an application that automatically converts documents created with Adobe FrameMaker or Microsoft Word to a variety of online formats.
Document conversion with WebWorks Publisher is template-based and style-based. Users map styles in their source documents (FrameMaker or Word) to output styles defined in a WebWorks Publisher template. The output styles determine the details of the conversion. As a simple example, in a standard HTML conversion, mapping a FrameMaker or Word paragraph style to the Heading1 style in WebWorks will result in text enclosed between <h1> and </h1> tags.
Editions
There are two separate editions of WebWorks Publisher:
- WebWorks Publisher Standard Edition
- WebWorks Publisher Professional Edition
WebWorks Publisher Standard Edition
WebWorks Publisher Standard Edition is bundled with Adobe FrameMaker and works only with FrameMaker source documents. This version substantially limits the user's ability to customize templates to control the conversion process and can convert documents only to HTML, XHTML, or XML.
WebWorks Publisher Professional Edition
WebWorks Publisher Professional Edition is sold separately by Quadralay Corporation, can be used with FrameMaker or Word, allows complete customization of templates, and supports a wider variety of output formats, including:
- Open standard formats (HTML, XHTML, and XML)
- Proprietary online Help formats:
- WebWorks Help
- Microsoft WinHelp
- Microsoft HTML Help
- Sun JavaHelp
- Oracle Help for Java
- Proprietary ebook formats:
- Microsoft Reader
- Palm Reader
WebWorks Publisher Professional Edition includes a template for each of these output formats. Users can customize templates and build new templates from scratch.
