Waterford Crystal is the brand name for a type of crystal glassware produced in Waterford, Ireland. The business was founded in 1793 by George and William Penrose. Their company closed, reportedly due to excessive taxation of the product. In 1947, the company was restarted due to the fine reputation of the original glassware.
In May 2005, Waterford Wedgewood announced the closure of its flagship factory in Dungarvan with loss of almost 500 jobs, and that production would move to Kilbarry, Waterford City, where 1,000 people are employed by the company.
