Walter Block is a leading Austrian School economist in the USA.
Block was born in Brooklyn, New York to Abraham Block, a CPA, and Ruth Block, a paralegal. He took his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College where he was a member of the Varsity Swimming Team. He became a libertarian after a personal meeting with Ayn Rand. Block earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University where he became interested in the Austrian School of economics.
He lives with his wife, Mary Beth, in his homes in New Orleans, Louisiana, British Columbia, and Seattle, Washington. He has two children: Matthew, a programmer at Microsoft; and Hannah, a Ph.D. candidate in Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
Block now holds the Harold E. Wirth Endowed Chair in Economics at Loyola University in New Orleans. He is a Senior Fellow of the Ludwig von Mises Institute for Austrian Economics. His most famous work is Defending the Undefendable. Block, along with his longtime friend and mentor Murray Rothbard, is considered to be one of the principle economists and thinkers of the Austrian School and Anarcho-Capitalism in general.
Prior to entering graduate school, Block worked as a successful Real Estate Investor in New York and in his early twenties owned buildings that if he had held on to would today be worth over 50 million dollars.
