WNYC are the call letters for two public radio stations in New York City. These are two of the most widely listened to public radio stations in the United States.
WNYC can be tuned at 820 AM and 93.9 FM on the radio dial in the New York metro area. Established on June 2, 1922, the 820 AM station is one of the oldest in the nation. The 93.9 FM station was added in 1943. The stations were owned by the City of New York until 1995, when the city sought to sell the broadcast licenses for revenue. They were then bought by private citizens through the WNYC Foundation to continue the public radio mission of the stations.
As with most public radio stations in the US, they broadcast programming from National Public Radio and Public Radio International as well as their own local programming. These include:
- The Brian Lehrer Show
- New Sounds with John Schaefer
- The Leonard Lopate Show
- On The Media
In early 2005, the radio station started offering podcasts of some of its locally produced programs, such as Lehrer and Lopate's shows and On The Media. In addition, they offer mp3 streams of both WNYC-AM and WNYC-FM which allow people to listen via the internet, no matter where they are in the world.
