Volunteers in Service to America
|
VISTA or Volunteers in Service to America created by Lyndon Johnson's Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, was a domestic version of the Peace Corps. This helped give people jobs that were in need of one. It was designed to give opportunities for education, training, work, and a chance to live in decency. During the Clinton Administration VISTA was brought under the AmeriCorps Program and was re-titled AmericCorps*VISTA. Volunteers are given a living stipend and upon completion of a 1 year term as well as educational assistance .
