Vin Mariani (French: Mariani's wine) is a tonic created circa 1863 by Angelo Mariani. This tonic was copied by John S. Pemberton who is known as Coca-Cola's inventor. Therefore, Angelo Mariani is known as the Grandfather of Coca-Cola.
When cocaine is administered on its own it yields two key active compounds, ecgonine methyl ester and benzoyleconine. Neither of these compounds have any psychoactive properties. However when combined with alcohol, like for example in 'Vin Mariani', the mixture has a powerful psychoactive: cocaethylene.
