The city

Tabasco's political powers resides here. It is the main city of Tabasco state and gathers its largest population. The city is an important business center for Mexican oil industry. Also known as La Esmeralda del Sureste (The Emerald of Southeast), Villahermosa is a modern city rich in natural resources.

History

Founded on 24 June 1596 by Spaniards on the banks of Grijalva River under the name of Villa Hermosa; in 1826 the village was raised to the rank of city under the name of San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist). In 1915, the governor of Tabasco, Francisco J. Múgica ordered to change the name of the city to its current name Villahermosa.

Geography and natural resources

Villahermosa is located in the Southeast of Mexico between rivers Grijalva and Carrizal, the average elevation of the city is 10 meters above sea level. The city, besides rivers, have several lagoons being the most important La Laguna de las Ilusiones (Illusions Lagoon).

Climate

Like most of the state, Villahermosa has a tropical climate. Temperature during Spring reaches 40° C and humidity during the same period is about 90%. In the short Winter climate is dry and temperature decreases.

Education

The capital city concentrates the most important universities of the state.
