Villa Savoye
|
The Villa Savoye is considered by many to be the seminal work of the Swiss architect Le Corbusier. It was completed in 1928.
Situated in Poissy, outside of Paris, it is one of the most recognisable architectural presentations of the International Style. The house was emblematic of Le Corbusier's work in that it addressed 4 basic theoretical tenets: 1) the ground-floor columns must elevate the house or living space employing a support system made up of "pilotis" or stilts; 2) the roof must be functional; in this instance, as a roof garden; 3) the house should have as many long windows as possible to encourage the inhabitant-nature coexistence principle; and 4) the facade should be devoid of decoration keeping with the "less is more" philosophy of German minimalists like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
