The Varginha incident is one of the strangest UFO-related occurrences in modern history. It included photos of UFOs, massive military operations (including tank shots being fired into saucer-like flying objects which quickly disappeared), reportings of close encounters with aliens and cover up conspiracies. Some say it is related to the chupacabra sightings in South and Central America, although this claim is largely unsupported.

This article is largely written from the perspective of ufology. The perspective of scientific skepticism is not currently presented here.

The UFO sighting and alien encounter

In 20 January 1996 NORAD detected a large unknown object in orbit entering the atmosphere. The object's flight path was later traced to Varginha (MG), Brazil, where US elite troops were supposedly quickly deployed and local Brazilian authorities warned. By 1 A.M. several sightings were reported, and two hours later two farmers were awakened by a loud noise outside their house, and saw a small object flying close to the ground and leaving a trail of smoke.

While this makes for a standard UFO sighting report, the following hours developed into something more sinister: The fire department was warned by 7 A.M. about a "strange creature" which had been seen on the location. Upon their arrival, the military was already on the spot, and hours later an apparently wounded unknown creature was found. According to reports of anonymous military officers, the creature was 1.60m tall with a pungent odour, very thin, with V-shaped feet, brown skin, wobbly consistency and red eyes.

Later that day, by 4 P.M., three young girls found another being, also apparently wounded. After the brief encounter, they ran home and told their mother they had seen the devil. Then they returned to the spot, and while the creature was no longer there, footprints and a strong smell were present.

Two days later, another creature was found lying along a road. Three military trucks were sent to retrieve it. It was captured by S2 officials (Brazil's military intelligence), and sent to a hospital to be examined.

A month later, animals in the Varginha Zoo started dying without apparent reason, and by April the final sighting related to the original sighting occurred: Teresa Clepfe was celebrating her birthday inside the zoo restaurant, and when she went to the balcony she saw a creature resembling the other reports.

Death of Marco Eli Cherese

Marco Eli Cherese was one of the MP officers who was inside the truck with the third alien. Weeks after the incident he died at age 23 of no apparent cause. The military and medical staff ordered the family to bury his body without delay or any funeral arrangements. A later attempt to exhume Cherese's body was refused by a judge for "national security" reasons.

No autopsy was made, although blood exams show he had one unusually high level of unknown toxins.

Cover-up allegations

As usually happens with less-than-ordinary files, the Varginha incident lacks credible and objective official explanations. Major Calza, an official of ESA (Escola de Sargentos de Armas - Sergeant's School) attributed the 20 January truck movements to repair work in Varginha (the ESA quarters are 25 km from the city), and the rumors of alien transport to a pregnant growth hormone deficient woman. The second sighting, by the three girls is also attributed to another GH deficient man, who according to Major Calza was injured badly that day.

The Varginha Fire Department denies any strange happening, but when asked in the 20 January 1996 report, Lt. Rubens denied it, claiming it was confidential. Medical staff also denies any happening, despite the military movement near the hospital.

Finally, General Lima of the ESA called a press meeting to officially deny any military involvement in the incident.
