Usulután from the Lenca language Uxulvotan is a department of El Salvador in the southeast of the country ( Maya Lenca region). The capital is Usulután.
El Salvador's largest department. It has an area of 2130.44 km² and a population of over 450,000.
The department was created on June 22, 1865.
On October 26, 1948, the Alegria district was extinguished and a new one was made instead, that was called Santiago de Maria district with the cities of Santiago de Maria (as the main city in the district), Alegria, Tecapan and California.
Usulutan City, the department's capital, was founded by the Lencas tribes but it was conquered by the Pipiles tribes.
The department is home to Jiquilisco or Espiritu Santo Bay and Port El Triunfo.
