Geology of the Himalaya

Hello,

I am the one who created the Wikipage on "Geology of the Himalaya" but also the copyright holder of the website [http://comp1.geol.unibas.ch/zanskar] and the PhD thesis from which it is derived: "Tectonic and Metamorphic Evolution of the Central Himalayan Domain in Southeast Zanskar (Kashmir, India)".

Please check my credentials as copyright holder by using the e-mail adress that you will find as a contact address under: [http://comp1.geol.unibas.ch/] or use the same e-mail that you will find on: [http://pages.unibas.ch/earth/tecto/Members/Dezes.htm]

I also thought that the copyright notice that I have put on [http://comp1.geol.unibas.ch/zanskar] would implicitly allow this kind of use (since reference was clearly made on the wikipedia page to the Zanskar page) but of course, I am not a lawyer.

With best regards

I'll take your word that you are the copyright holder. See also Talk:Geology of the Himalaya. Thue | talk 10:42, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Zanskar

I'm not defacing the Zanskar page. However, I apologise if it causes displeasure upon you, but your English grammar is really, really bad, and cleanup is critically needed. Furthermore, everybody has the right to edit wikipedia as long as it is not vandalism. However, how can you prove to me that

http://comp1.geol.unibas.ch/zanskar

is your website? Is your name Pierre Dèzes? I hope that the content is really yours. According to the Zanskar talk page, you only specified that the images are yourd, but not the content. I am also unable to reach the website comp1.geol.unibas.ch/zanskar homepage that you have specified, as it has an error check page by stating Document not found and I afraid that you may have to provide more information about the ownership of the images to me if you could so that I can confirm that you are the photographer. (Furthermore, I feel that color images should be put up rather than black & white images. Do you have them? I feel that the look of the Zanskar page would be much nicer if they are colored.)

I also feel that my version serves as a better basis for the page. However, I fully admit that it needs expansion; and if you could use your content to add information is better.

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that does not widely accept borrowrd content, as it is an encyclopedia, unless you are really the author of the website where you borrow the content.

Ah yes, about the etymology, I don't like it because your grammar really terrible. Just compare yourself with how the content of Sikkim is written instead.

Tan, 13:36, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Fair enough, we shall take a vote on whose version should we based on and continue edit from there. On the contary, I do agree with the Etymology section and I have see you have put in some efforts to improve article quality, but it is still of unacceptable standard, as the orientation format is still very poor, in comparison to mine. I shall hint out to where your mistakes are:

  • You should not start out with a section, but in the form of a general comment like mine.
  • Your grammar still needs very much improvement.
  • A lot of irrelavant facts in your content, and content in article should be cut short, sweet and simle like those of Sikkim.
  • If the information are outdated and you know it, you should update it it and not persistantly providing the old information (eg: the population of Zanskar.
  • Tourism of Zanskar should be also highlighted, like Sikkim.

Also, for miscellanous uses, I would like to call you a professor for you are really familiar about Zanskar. I agree to have the images up there, but do you swear that they are really taken by you? I would be very happy to have it up there if its really taken by you.

Also, concerning the Zanskar article, we shall ask the wikipedians to take a vote on whose content should act as a basis: See more at Zanskar. ( I hope you can accept it for the time being and apologise for any displeasure and inconvinence caused. )

Ah yes, I would also like to hint out that be it the majorty votes come to me or you, I would like to have the following suggestions:

  • Placing up the Tourism section,
  • Placing up the etymology section
  • Placing up the external links section

If there are no votes by 7 days, this should be put Wikipedia:Resolving disputes as I understand Zanskar is a rather unpopular topic, and this will help to attract polls.

Once again, I seek future coporation to work with you on the Zanskar article.

Mr Tan 1943, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I hope that you'll return to editing the [[Zanskar] article; I shall be around to make sure that Mr Tan stays withing the limits of Wikipedia editing, so that it should be possible for you to collaborate with him. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:35, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I want you to hold a discussion on May 10 or 11 about Zanskar. Stay online in wikipedia between those days. Thanks.

Tan 23:32, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Zanskar

What do you mean by the syntax given the Nichalp? Please elaborate. From the strange altitude of you and Mel, I see that you look like trying to reject every contribution that I make, good or bad.

What is Mel trying to mean by this? withing the limits of Wikipedia editing, so that it should be possible for you to collaborate with him.

Mr Tan 12:55, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Very good. You have finally replaced the black and white pictures with the colored ones. However, the content and sentences still needs cleanup.

Mr Tan 01:34, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I would apologise if I'm rude, but I have no intention to be agressive. Due to my exams, I would like to hold back the discussion and major edits, which I would be doing at that time. Anyway, I gave you this meessage partly because you were not always online in the past.

Anyway, your stuling is poor, but not the grammar. Thus, the {gcheck} template have to be put up, as this also pertains to the styling of the article. From there, I will have to either reshift, (maybe delete a few facts) to make it more tidy. Honestly, your styling and sentence construction is very poor.

Mr Tan 09:22, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The Troublesome You-Know-Who

Dear Moumine, thanks for the compliments. Indeed, it is quite unbearable to correct something as garbled as that, but luckily, patience is on my side. Time, unfortunately not. It's very easy to correct bad English, but if it comes from a person who thinks he has good knowledge of the language but actually does not, that's quite another matter. I'll do my best to fix up whatever I can. : ) You're from France? Which part? JMBell° 23:25, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I agree with you there. There are sooooo many errors. I don't know how one can make so many errors, especially if one claims to have good English. No offence meant. : ) Anyway, I've tried another tactic with You-Know-Who (see his talk page). I have a mind to put his "best" edits on BJAODN, but I don't know if that'd be mean... So you're from Switzerland? I see.... You sell Toblerone? :) You're lucky, you Swiss get to preserve your independence. Where exactly are you from? JMBell° 11:52, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Zanskar

I concerned about your article. Honestly, your styling looks more like a research paper than an encyclopedia article, as the way you write is monotomous, rather than a piece of interesting and exciting work. Please restyle it, something like Lahul and Spiti. If you want to know about the standard of my English, go and see how the Liancourt Rocks is written.

I also appeal ypu not to delete the Kinner Kailash redirect. This is a common colloquial name.

Concerning about Kinnaur and Zanskar, I will correct everything according to your requests while I will point your mistakes in Zanskar. I am not Chan Han Xiang, my name is Randall Chinhong Tan, and Hans Tan is my nickname. Go ahead and edit Kinnaur, but don't make a mess on the styling of the article like Zanskar.

I would like to hint your major mistake. You have a habit to use and, rather than breaking up the sentence with a comma in the Keylong article. Please use commas and try not to use brackets, or ; as much as possible, as it makes the article boring. You see how Enid Blyton writes her books.

I have now opened Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Mr Tan, as I could see no other way forward. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:50, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Commas

Wikipedia style (as well as most U.S. guides, and the U.K. "Oxford style") uses what's known as the "serial comma". This is because, although its use can (under very unusual conditions) lead to ambiguity, its absence often does. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 21:12, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Zanskar

Please respect my decision for my edit. I do not intend to criticise you for your edits, but I only want to cleanup the article format into a way that resembles more like other articles. I will revert it to the last revision, but more edits will be done by me. Please tolerate for the time being as I need to regenerate myself up before I do any major copy-editing.

By the way, I acknowledge that my spelling may have some errors, (usually when I'm tired) just as most people have.

Yours, sincerely

Tan 20:27, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Kinnaur

Sorry — it's a problem with the admin's "rollback" function. It sometimes doesn't rollback to where I want it to. I meant to go back to my last version; instead it rolled back to the previous edit. I'll change it. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:15, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi Moumine, nice to know our old friend's back, eh? Good luck with the diplomatic stuff - it's hard to reason with this fella. Happy spring cleaning! And good luck - we'll need it, I'm sure. JMBell° 16:36, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

Reply

Moumine, although the grammar of the Zanskar article has witnessed a considerable improvement, I would like to indulge on a one-to-one discussion (using Mel Etitis and JMBell as witnesses, or judges) on the content of how Zanskar is written, preferably on 30 May 2005.

Anyway, I will attend to your question that you have posted on my talk page together with the proposed discussion. Any objections? (I hope not.)

Tan 20:57, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

Zanskar

If you are interested, you may look up [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28miscellaneous%29#Copyediting_on_Zanskar). (Sorry for the delay, for my computer was down)

Also, I hope that you will not object to the removal of the {dubious} tag on Lahul and Spiti. I don't see any disputes on the history section for a very long time.
