  • on* not *upon* BTW

I beg your pardon? Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair! 08:52, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

It doesn't scan? Good grief - you're right! Thankfully, that's no concern of mine - it's a quote -

"I met a traveller from an antique land, who said:
Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies,
Whose frown, and wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command
Tell that the sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things...
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."
-- Percy Bysshe Shelley, "Ozymandias"

Look on my works, ye Mighty,
Quote? Quite!

What source are you looking at?Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair! 09:04, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

the one you just posted, for a start.
) Interesting, I'd never seen that version before, I copied it from the first google site I found without even noticing - the version I have always seen, and the paper version I have reads 'upon'. I wonder what's going on there?Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair! 09:14, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Ive only ever seen *on*, *upon* would have 11 syllables, and every other line has 10. the Ozymandias article also quotes *on*.

Fascinating.Look upon my works, ye Mighty, and despair! 09:20, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Jokes don't really belong in articles. If you keep that up ("sun-spectacles"), you'll just get yourself blocked, maybe by me. Daniel Quinlan 09:29, Dec 15, 2003 (UTC)

I have seen *sun-spectacles* for sale at my local optician. Proffessionals use this term to define a particular type of spectacle. It wasnt a joke.
e.g. see [1] (http://www.jarvisoptometrist.co.uk/specs.htm), an opticians website that uses this term. 207.44.154.35

That's laughable.

Google for "sun-spectacles" is 87 hits. "Sunglasses" has 3,310,000 hits, many more than 87 in the UK as well. Daniel Quinlan 09:43, Dec 15, 2003 (UTC)

google searches dont prove much. Do you deny that I.O.Jarvis, Professional Optometrist, uses the term sun spectacles? You would put your trust in people like that if you suffered from eye problems, so why dont you accept their terminology? [2] (http://www.matheson-optometrists.com/leisure%20specs.htm) is another optician's website using this correct term.

Two things: one is that I request you get a user account...it's much easier to leave comments for you when I always know I'm talking to the same person. The second is a question: why did you change QEII back to "Her Majesty"? The community had agreed to remove the title. If you have an issue with this, don't start an edit war...leave a note on the article's talk page, please. Thank you. Jwrosenzweig 00:46, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)

One, cookies arent working on this PC so I cannot get a use account Im afraid. I have tried in fact, but get the message "cookies are required".
Two, in the same article Marget Thatcher is quoted as saying "they are quietly businesslike and Her Majesty brings to bear a formidable grasp of current issues...". Using Her Majesty in this way is the correct form of both address and reference. It is conventional, and not PoV as another user seems to think. Its the same principal as not refering to people as "it", a matter of convention and the correct terms to use. 207.44.154.35
Margret Thatcher says "Her Majesty" because QEII is her Majesty, in the word's full meaning. Non-UK subjects, however, though they may refer to the Queen as "Her Majesty" out of courtesy, have no reason to do so. Should each Pope's article refer to him as "His Holiness"? Presidents of the United States are properly called "The President" and "Mr. President"...should these terms be placed in every President's article? Because many Wikipedians do not consider QEII to be their "majesty" (and some, particularly in Ireland, might feel somewhat politically oppressed in doing so), it is wisest to adopt a neutral pronoun such as "she". Do not compare this with calling a person "it". The method of gender reference is a purely grammatical issue; the
issue you are raising is demanding worldwide recognition of the social conventions referring to English sovereigns. It is something like rewriting the Jesus Christ article to refer to Jesus always as "the Son of God". Please stop changing these articles and have a discussion about this? Obviously you and I disagree...perhaps everyone here should express their views before an edit war starts? Jwrosenzweig 01:00, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
If I called you or anyone else "it", you would be rightly offended. It isnt just a grammatical construct, its a sign of respect. In the same way, correctly addressing and referencing Her Majesty the Queen is simply acknowledging the fact that she IS the Queen, and whether she reigns over any particular wikipedia contributor or not is irrelevant -- she is still the Queen of the United Kingdon. Its not as if I'm changing ever occurence of the word "she" to "Her Majesty", either -- Im simply adding it where it is appropriate to preserve the Queen's dignity. Every person who is mentioned on wikipedia has the right to have their dignity respected, and to ignore this would be PoV. Nor is it as if Im introducing this as a whole new convention -- it was applied beforehand until someone when about deleting the correct address. I would refer to the Pope as his holiness, and Im not a catholic (or even religious), but that is still the correct form of address and reference because it recognises the fact that he is the Pope. I dont need to be catholic to believe that the Pope exists, and nor does a reader need to be English to refer to Her Majesty using the correct form of address and reference. 207.44.154.35
Your "cookies are required" problem is most likely due to a personal firewall (Zonealarm, BlackICE-defender, Norton-firewall). To quick'n'dirty test this hypothesis, one can (very temporarily disable) the firewall software - if this lets you log in, the proper solution is to tweak your firewall to accept non-3rd party cookies from en2.wikipedia.org (and probably en.wikipedia.org, www.wikipedia.org, meta.wikipedia.org, and any of the other subsites you care to edit). Tell me how you get on. -- Finlay McWalter 01:03, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Thanks, Ill try doing this. 207.44.154.35

Hi 207. Just to let you know that you have to have a user account to vote on Votes for Deletion. I gather you are having trouble making cookies work, and I sympathise, but if you follow the advice above you should be able to make them work. They go through my firewall with no trouble.
