Unreal II: The Awakening is a first-person shooter computer game, designed initially only for a single-player campaign. The game is part of the Unreal series and is a prequel to 1998's Unreal.
However, because of the fact Unreal II takes place before even the original game, at times it seems like an entirely different universe with a different bestiary of weapons, enemies, allies, environments, items, locations, and more. The most important tie-in is the appearance of the dreaded Skaarj aliens from the series. There are also some other names, some of which originated in this game, like all company names except for Liandri. The story mentions the Izarian Shock Lance is based on ASMD technology, which is the base of the different incarnations of the Shock Rifle of the series. The new variant of the Dispersion Pistol returns in Unreal_Championship_2:_The_Liandri_Conflict.
Unreal II, in general, was also quite a major disapointment to novices and hardcore gamers alike who favored the original game's initial single-player campaign and multiplayer mode (something Unreal II lacked for quite a while).
Unreal II was developed by the now defunct Legend Entertainment, published by Infogrames and released on February 4, 2003 for the PC. It was later ported to Microsoft's Xbox on February 10, 2004.
Though its focus was on single-player gameplay, later Unreal II eXpanded MultiPlayer was released, greatly improving the multiplayer portion of the game.
