Current Event: Certification 70 Controversy
Currently the University went through a tense situation, as a strike was declared by students on mid-april due to a rise on the costs of credits. Certification 70 establishes a 33% increase on all costs for students.
After this, a group of students went on an assembly an declared a strike to try to abolish this certification. After three weeks of strikes, the situation got tense when an assembly became from a simple reunion into a small-scale riot as the members that favor the strike pushed down the ballot table and started breaking the ballots into pieces, burned pictures of the actual student council president, threw plastic water bottles to those against the strike, and declared the assembly ilegit.
Fearing state police intervention, the students that were on strike barricated themselves inside campus, and were not allowing either the press or the administration inside. College authorities wanted to examine the campus right after images of vandalism were released to the press; also an investigation was started due to events that led two people to be stabbed when trying to enter campus.
After four meetings, the initial two (favoring the protest), a third (which was cancelled due to violent events), the students voted to put an end to the strike on the first week of May 2005. The protest was lifted right after a group (not affiliated with the student council) made an agreement with the administration to delay the implementation of Certification 70 until a cost analysis of the universitie's financial spendings was done.
The aftermath of the strike was itself a hard knock for students: an extended semester (ending June 21, 2005), a graduation with no date, a number of summer sections cancelled, academic problems with students accepted into summer internships or student exchange programs, among others.
The whole purpose of the srike, the complete elimination of Certification 70, was not achieved. And, some think that the costs will increase no matter how much students protest it. There's a popular believe that this whole scenario might be reincarnated before the beginning or during the first semester of the 2005-2006 academic year.
