The University of Maryland University College (UMUC), with headquarters in Adelphi, Maryland, provides access to higher education for adult, part-time students in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
UMUC is an outgrowth of the University of Maryland's evening program for adults which began in the 1920s. In 1947 the College of Special and Continuation Studies was established and, in 1959, this became UMUC. In 1970 UMUC became a independent institution but in 1988 became a part of the University System of Maryland. Its main facility is still located adjacent to the UMD College Park campus.
UMUC also serves US military members and families stationed in Europe and Asia, and has an extensive distance learning program as well.
It offers 23 undergraduate degree programs and 18 graduate degree programs.
