University of Indonesia

The University of Indonesia or Universitas Indonesia in Indonesian is one of Indonesia's most famous universities. Located in and around the capital of Jakarta, University of Indonesia is known for its abbreviated name UI (pronounced oo'ee) and the yellow jacket its students wear.

UI is also famous for being one of the leader of student movement in important points of Indonesian history. Notably the Indonesian Reforms Movement of 1998 and Indonesian Revolution of 1966.

Campus

Salemba

Salemba Campus, located in Central Jakarta, is dedicated mostly for the medical and dental faculty. It was built adjoining the Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital (RSCM) as well as the University Dental Hospital. It also has some remaining sites of the Faculty of Economics and Engineering.

Depok

Depok Campus, located in the administrative region of Depok in the south of Jakarta, was built around the mid-1980s to accommodate the modernization of the university towards the 21st century. Most of the faculties (engineering, psychology, letters, economics, social politics, law) have been relocated here. A plan is also has been made to relocate the undergraduate training of the medical and dental faculties to Depok.

Faculties

Fasilkom

It is an acronym for Fakultas Ilmu Komputer or Faculty of Computer Science at University of Indonesia; located in the Depok campus and also in Salemba, Jakarta. This faculty was established in 1993.

FKG

FKG is an acronym for Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi or Faculty of Dentistry and located in Salemba.

The faculty was first developed in 1954 by the Indonesian Dental Association, Professor Ouw Eng Liang and his colleagues. This idea was supported by Rector of the University of Indonesia (Prof. Dr. Sudjono Djuned Pusponegoro) and Dean Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (Prof. Dr. Soekarjo), and finally the Indonesian Minister of Education recognized the faculty through his formal letter 108049, dated December 21, 1960. In 1961, the faculty started accepting students. All facilities used were belonged to the Central Public Hospital (known as the Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital ) and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia. During the first years, lectures were done together with the medical faculty.

On March 27, 1965, the faculty opened a dental clinic for public services under the Faculty Foundation. In 1967, it graduated its first 15 dentists, and the alumni organization ,which is known as ILUNI-FKGUI, was established. Until 1986, three main bulidings have been established, located at Jalan Salemba 4, and later on an additional classroom in building D is available for lecture. These buildings has been used for classrooms, auditorium, student activities, administration rooms, lecturer’s rooms, laboratories, cafetaria , musholla, and other facilities. To support the community service education, a dental clinic of Public Health Center located in Serpong, Tangerang was established in collaboration with the university’s rural project.

Postgraduate specialist program in clinical dentistry was started in 1982 and has developed into seven specialties in dentistry, followed by the establishment of Doctorate Program in Dental Science in 1991. The curriculum for undergraduate student was changed in 1996 according to the new paradigm for dental science education, and then recognized Sarjana Kedokteran Gigi, and Dokter Gigi. Students achieved 147 credit points (SKS) entitled to a Bachelor degree (Sarjana Kedokteran Gigi) and eligible to continue their studies by completing another 28 credit points to graduate as dentist (Dokter Gigi). In 1998, the faculty established Master Degree Programs consist of Basic Dental Sciences and Preventive and Community Dentistry as an opportunity for Sarjana Kedokteran Gigi to pursue and continue higher education.

The Dental Clinic has developed into University Dental Hospital (RSGM FKG UI) that officially established in 1996. This hospital is the main focus of the faculty teaching activities as well as dental public services.

The faculty also covers several departments, i.e. Conservative Dentistry, Dental Materials & Technology, Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, Oral Biology, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Preventive & Community Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Periodontics. All these departments reflects the specialty dental services and training provided in the faculty, except Dental Materials and Oral Biology, which scope the basic dental sciences.
