Universal City is the 415 acre (1.7 km²) property of Universal Studios in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. Approximately 70% is in an unincorporated area of the county surrounded by the City of Los Angeles, and the remaining area is in the city itself[1] (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m5072/is_23_24/ai_91213483). It continues to be home to Universal Studios. Located here are 10 Universal Plaza (a 36-floor office building for Universal and NBC), the Sheraton Universal, the Universal Hilton, Universal Studios Hollywood (the theme park), Universal Citywalk (a shopping and entertainment center), Universal Amphitheatre (host to concerts and other events), and Universal's studios, sets, and lots. A Metro Rail Red Line station that serves Universal City is located across the street from 10 Universal Plaza.

Universal Studios was founded by 39 year old Carl Laemmle, who first started out as an owner of a nickelodeon theater in Chicago. He purchased the 230 acre lot in California for the sum $165,000, planning to expand his holdings nationally. Significantly, the lot was across the street where the Treaty of Cahuenga in 1846 was signed.
