Enemies
The Campaigner has many henchmen and soldiers working under him; humans, aliens, demons, robots and dinosaurs:
- Poachers: Poachers are humans, who can be found mainly in the early levels of the game. They carry a Pistol or Knife.
- Soldiers: Soldiers in The Campaigners army wear armour that protects them from minimal damage. They charge with long tridents and spears, or shoot from a distance with rifles.
- Lieutenants: The Lieutenant is a heavily armed and armoured soldier. They are equipped with large, menacing looking spiked armour and sporting a powerful pulse rifle.
- Tribal Warriors: Natives to the lost land, they are painted like skeletons to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies. They use bones, spears and powerful blow pipes.
- Purlins: Giant ape like monsters, Purlins can pound the ground, sending out damaging shockwaves. In later levels they have energy cannons on their arm.
- Raptors: The most common dinosaur, raptors are fairly fast and strong. Later in the game they have guns on their arms and metal plate armour on various parts of their bodies.
- Diemtrechus: The spike backed dinosaur is very strong and can have machine guns mounted on its back.
- Triceratops: These big dinosaurs have one of The Campaigners soldiers mounted on their backs, along with rocket launchers.
- Robots: Robots are armed with powerful weapons.
- Turret Guns: Mounted gun platforms
- Cyborgs: The Campaigners elite soldiers, they have pulse rifles and hard metal batons.
- Aliens: Aliens have special guns mounted to their arms, and they jet high up in the air and land behind Turok.
- Demons: Demons have dangerous claws and Demon Chieftains cast powerful spells.
- Shamans: They wear skull masks and cast magical spells.
- Giant Insects: Throughout the game there are giant dragonflies and beetles.
- Giant Plants: There are also Giant plants that pose a threat to Turok.
- Giant Worms: Giant worms can burst out of the ground and do damage.
- Leapers: Usually found in caves, tunnels and also underwater. Their high-pitched shrieks make them easy to find. .
Bosses
There are four major bosses in the game:
- The Longhunter: Turok must face him at the end of level 3. He is armed with a pulse rifle and throws boomerangs.
- Preying Mantis: This boss flies around while knocking down walls and dropping lethal acidic goo on you.
- Thunder: A gigantic, Cybernetic T-rex, it can breathe fire, shoot lasers, bite and stomp Turok.
- The Campaigner: The final Boss, he can teleport around the map and he carries a chronocepter.
Weapons
- Knife: Default weapon, it is good as an ammo saver at the beginning of the game.
- Bow and Arrows: A basic ranged weapon. More powerful arrows can be found that do more damage.
- Pistol: Basic hand pistol.
- Shotgun and Auto Shotgun: Powerful shotguns. The auto also fires fast, although it uses up ammo fast too. There are explosive shells you can find that do substantial damage even to stronger enemies.
- Assault Rifle: It’s as strong as the pistol and uses pistol ammo, but every time you pull the trigger it fires 3 bullets instead of one.
- Mini gun: Large gun that also uses pistol ammo. The fast rate of fire and higher ammo capacity of 500 bullets makes up the lower damage.
- Pulse Rifle: Futuristic rifle.
- Grenade Launcher: Fires one Grenade at a time.
- Quad-Rocket Launcher: This fires 4 missiles at once.
- Particle Accelerator: The longer you charge it up, the more effectively it will freeze a group of enemies. After they are frozen for a moment, they will start crackling, turn black and explode into pieces.
- Alien Gun: This gun fires a bolt of energy that once it makes contact with something it explodes after a slight pause.
- Fusion Cannon: Nuclear powered weapon. When fired it fills the whole screen with a greenish-orange light and kills any nearby enemies.
- Chronocepter: You must collect the 8 pieces to this gun throughout the game to use it. It's the most powerful weapon in the game. It shoots a blast of white light, then blinds you and does huge damage.
Features
When first released for the PC, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was one the first games to implement some of the cutting-edge computer graphics technologies of the time, including realistic water and distance fog. The use of fog is a distinguishing aspect of the game, as the player is given a very small visibility radius, which can prove to be an annoyance at times. The reason for the fog was to improve game performance by decreasing the amount of visible objects, to allow smooth game play despite the advanced graphics features.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is also a bloody game, where creatures die violently, with blood spraying out of their neck and head, when killed.
Sequels
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter spawned several sequels:
- Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (released on PC, Game Boy, and Nintendo 64)
- Turok: Rage Wars (released on Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64)
- Turok 3: Shadows of Oblivion (released on Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64)
- Turok: Evolution (released on Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox)
