Russian POW
After near the town a concentration camp for prisoners of war and interned was established by Germans during World War I. After the retreat of Germans it was passed to Poland in January 1920 and known as concentration camp no. 7. It existed until 1923. At this time it housed mainly soldiers and cossacks of the Imperial Russiam Army. In 1921 it housed about 500 offecers and over 7,000 of rank and file. At least 1,300 Russians dies there for various reasons, mainly due to poor sanitary conditions.
