The Youdan Cup
|
The Youdan Cup was the world's first ever organised football tournament. A local theatre owner Thomas Youdan sponsored the competition and provided a trophy.
Twelve Sheffield clubs took part. The participants were:
Broomhall, Fir Vale, Garrick, Hallam F.C., Heeley, Mackenzie, Mechanics, Milton, Norfolk, Norton, Pitsmoor, Wellington.
The final was played at Bramall Lane, Sheffield on Mar 5th 1867. The Sheffield scoring system at the time used the concept of 'rouges' in addition to a four yards wide goal, rather than the regulation 8 yards wide goal, and Hallam beat Norfolk by two rouges to one after a goalless draw.
