The World's Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child is a prize founded by the Swedish organization Children's World and has support from the Swedish government as well as several humanitarian organizations. It actually concists of three different prizes: The World's Children's Prize, The Global Friends' Award and The World's Children's Honorary Award. The World's Children's Prize is decided by a jury of children from all over the world, each representing a group if the world's children. The Global Friends' Award is decided by children in schools and organizations all over the world that take place in a global vote. In 2004, 1.3 million children voted. For them it was a chance to learn about the right's of the child and also a lesson in democracy.
The price ceremony takes place in April each year since 2000, but there was no global vote in the first year. Three nominees for the prizes are selected each year.
The patron of the prize is Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden, and an honorary committee of "adult friends", for example Nelson Mandela, East Timor's president Xanana Gusmão and the Swedish prime minister Göran Persson.
