The Simpsons Hit & Run is a video game based on The Simpsons franchise. It was created by Vivendi Universal.
It was made in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube, Microsoft's Xbox, and Sony's PlayStation 2. The game was in the same format as the later Grand Theft Auto games, with a third person view and an explorable town complete with drivable vehicles (albeit with much less violence and mature content). The GTA series had appeared on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, but had never made it to the Nintendo GameCube, due to Nintendo's longstanding, yet slowly softening policy of shunning adult content. The Simpsons Hit & Run, therefore, is a gentler version of the popular series.
The story mode focuses on strange goings on in Springfield; mysterious black vans have appeared around the town and video cameras, attached to wasps, are monitoring its inhabitants. Going though the various story levels allows the player to control Lisa Simpson, Homer Simpson, Marge Simpson, Bart Simpson, and Apu; other Simpsons characters often appear in non-playable roles.
Outside of the story missions there are other playable aspects. The player can acquire new cars or costumes by collecting coins to buy them or participating in races. There are also "collector cards" hidden around the different levels, when enough have been collected then there are bonus elements unlocked.
The Simpsons Hit & Run is available for Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Windows-based personal computers.
