The Fulcrum

The Fulcrum is the English language student paper at the University of Ottawa.
The paper dates back to 1942, when the University's philosophy club began publishing its newsletter. The name was eventually changed to the Fulcrum, and it became the English newspaper for the students on the bilingual campus. Beginning in the 2003-2004 school year, the paper has begun referring to itself as the Fulcrum, rather than The Fulcrum, and the name on the cover is University of Ottawa's Fulcrum. Shortly thereafter, the paper separated from the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa, becoming an independent legal entity in an effort to resolve a potential conflict of interest, which might arise should the paper need to publish articles about its owner.
The newspaper covers news, culture, and sports information relevant to students, and contains a feature article or section each week. It is published weekly during the school year, and less regularly during exam and break periods. By tradition, the last issue published contains a parody publication within; the last one published at the end of the 2005 school year, for example, was a parody of The Onion.
The Fulcrum is not just an English version of La Rotonde, rather, the two are completely separate--and sometimes rivalling--entities. Both newspapers are members of the Canadian University Press (CUP).
