Tea room
|
A tea room is a variety of café found particularly in England, but also present in other parts of the UK, as well as Australia, India, New Zealand, and some other Commonwealth countries. A visitor might expect to receive a cream tea, often served from a china set, and a scone with jam and clotted cream.
In a related usage, a tea room may be a room set aside in a workplace for workers to relax and (specifically) take refreshment during work-breaks.
Alternative meanings or usage
The phrase tearoom is also slang within homosexual subculture referring to a venue where public sex occurs, typically a public toilet (see also cottaging, glory hole). Sociologist Laud Humphries has written a controversial book on this subject titled Tearoom trade: Impersonal sex in public places, which is often referenced in the context of ethics due to his nonstandard research techniques.
