Template Theory
Theree's been some speculation on the part of myself and others (as I recognize writing styles from the K-C toon articles here, and commentary on Nickdisk (http://emerald.bbboy.net/nickdisk) as well as news:alt.tv.nickelodeon) as to whether K-C actively employs templates in character and plot design. While I think there's a good deal of empirical support for a template theory, I don't think I'd name it as such or post an article about it, but I will share my observations. Mind you, this applies to the "human" toons (RR, TWT, RP, ATBG, and AGU) and not necessarily to something like Duckman, Aah! Real Monsters!, etc.
Characters
Possession of a trait doesn't necessarily correspond to a character's personality type or location within power structure. For example, Otto (RP) and little Chuckie (RR) both have unique hairstyles and wear noticeable glasses, but Otto is clearly a Leader while Chuckie is a Sidekick.
Traits and Props
- Glasses
- Hairstyle
- Chronic medical condition (Sammy: asthma. Chuckie: allergies)
- Use of journals (Ginger) or videography (Twister, big Tommy)
- Eats just about anything (DeVilles, Sammy)
- Abnormal skill or interest (Eliza: talks to animals. Otto: coordination. Carl: alchemy. Noelle: psychotelekinesis)
Offices in the dramatis personae
- Meanie (Angelica, Debbie, Lars, Miranda, Samantha)
- Fearless Leader (Otto, Eliza, little Tommy, Carl)
- Sidekick (Twister, little Chuckie, Hoodsey)
- Fraidy-cat (Darwin, Sammy, little Chuckie)
Plots
Somebody noticed several key similarities between a RR special and the RP movie Reggie's Big (Beach) Break. They can't be so hard up for ideas that they recycle stories, can they?
Just an observation. - knoodelhed 07:01, 25 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Ungvichian, 4:11am GMT 15 Dec 03: I'm the one who pointed the above thing out. That RR special was "All Growed Up" (the inspiration for All Grown Up!), and the similarities are as follows:
- Both feature 11-year-olds who want to go to a concert (in Otto's case it's part of a sportsfest).
- In both cases, their father grounds them (Tommy: for taking his dad's medallion, Otto: for "breaking a promise", and although I haven't been elaborated on what it was, one has suggested that it may be having to prepare for the expected rise in business at the Shore Shack due to the sportsfest).
- In both cases, the concert involves a pop star with weird hair (Rugrats: blue-haired Emica, RP: pink-haired Shaffika, voiced by Stacy Ferguson, and did you know she wasn't even credited for the role?).
- In both cases, the boys decide to go anyway, and get to share the stage not just with the pop star, but also a relative 2 years his senior (Otto has Reggie and Tommy has Angelica).
Just in case you want to know, I've created (so far) the articles on All Grown Up!, As Told By Ginger, and The Weekenders, and have signifcantly contributed to the articles on Rocket Power and The Wild Thornberrys.
