Talk:Foreign relations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

I think the correct name is Democratic Republic of Congo. Can someone correct this entry? SR

Why don't we call this country South Congo and the Republic of Congo - North Congo??? We have North and South Korea, so why not South and North Congo??? --swPawel

We can't call it South Congo because that is not the name ofteh country. One way of distinguishing the two states might be to list the capitals next to the name: Congo (Kinshasa) and Congo (Brazzaville) Danny

North/South Korea and North/South Vietnam aren't official names of these countries, but they are in use. --swPawel

Those are the conventional names of the countries. We cannot make up conventional names. Danny

These names are already used - e. g. http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/warstatx.htm --swPawel

I dont know what that site is but u will not find those names used anywhere else. This is ridiculous. You cannot rename a country out of convenience. The names are not accepted convention. They can be distinguished by Congo and The Congo, Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo (Brazzaville) and Congo (Kinshasa). No atlas or almanac will use North Congo and South Congo. No newspapers will either. The countries do not use them. They do not appear that way in the UN. Yes, it is confusing. Yes, Zaire was easier to use as a name. Yes, it is a stupid thing to have two countries with the same name neighboring each other. Unfortunately, that is the situation. Your suggestion may make sense even, but unfortunately Wikipedia does not determine convention. They have to go back to their real names. Danny

What is this I hear of a North and South Congo? There are no such contries. It is not our concern that the leaders of these nations are stupid enough to call the countries they rule darn near the same thing. We simply must use the names that those countries and the UN use -- end of story. Wikipedia is not in the business of renaming countries. --maveric149

The French names for the countries are République (Démocratique) du Congo, but the du need not be rendered of the: it's just French grammar to use du rather than de in such names. I would prefer 'Congo' over 'the Congo' in the English names. And one more voice here to confirm they are never called North and South (anyway, in my atlas they look more east and west!). - What I really want to ask is what on earth is this "Akira's land"? --Gritchka

re French: in French, names of countries take articles (le Canada, la France), etc. (One thing this does is distinguish between countries and cities: Québec is the city, le Québec the province.) The presence of an article in French does not affect whether we use the article in English.
As for Akira's Land, a Google search turned up nothing relevant (only six articles, two of which were this page and the article itself), so I have provisionally deleted it pending an explanation. - Montréalais
