Talk:Assemblage 23

A new article for Tom Shear now exists, including early biographical information from Tom Shear himself via e-mail (original Wikipedia research!). Over time, I may edit this Assemblage 23 article such that the Tom Shear article focuses on the details of Tom Shear and the Assemblage 23 article focuses on the details of Assemblage 23. (Since he is the sole member, it is natural that these have wound up getting mixed up to this point.) --X3non 19:25, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

As far as musical genre goes, Assemblage 23 isn't "goth". I could understand linking to EBM and/or synthpop from Category:Goth, but not directly here. Are you just linking to anything that someone who considers themself "goth" might listen to? If so, IMHO this would dilute the category so far as to be worthless. I'd like to revert, but I'm willing to hear thoughts. - Korpios 21:37, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hmm. There are bands inside Category:Goth (not added by me) such as VNV Nation and Type O Negative, where you (well, I) wouldn't consider every band in their genre to be 'goth', but nonetheless certain bands which may not be directly 'goth' are worth associating with it. Would you also advocate reverting/not adding other EBM/futurepop/industrial groups such as VNV, Wumpscut, etc...? I don't think this necessarily dilutes the category: while 'futurepop' or 'industrial' may or may not be goth, there are bands which are more goth than others inside a particular genre (I'm not listing Throbbing Gristle under Goth, example). I'd feel more comfortable seeing the particular musical genres linked rather than the musical groups directly, unless the group is either "gothic rock", "deathrock", or even "darkwave". A category link shows up on the article for the musical group itself, and IMHO this stands to be confusing to readers of the article. So yes, I'd absolutely advocate reverting given bands on a case by case basis (e.g. KMFDM and Wumpscut certainly don't belong in there). If this was Category:Industrial, I wouldn't see as much of a problem. - Korpios 22:02, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Well, I won't object if you want to revert some of the additions. However, I do think they should be listed somehow (List of non-goth bands that some goths listent to?) Lady Lysine Ikinsile 22:09, Jun 17, 2004 (UTC)
Sure, that works. Thoughts as to what it should be called? (If you want to go ahead and create one, let me know and I'll start moving stuff.) - Korpios 22:33, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Something like List of non-goth bands associated with the goth subculture? I'm really in two minds about this. On the one hand; no, Assemblage 23 (and VNV, and Wumpscut, and KMFDM) are not musically "goth". But on the other, they're very widely listened to in the modern goth scene, and one is likely to hear them at "goth" club nights. Perhaps it's misleading to see "Category: Goth" at the end of Assemblage 23, but conversely, to see Assemblage 23 listed under Category:Goth seems quite acceptable.
So... if you feel the aforementioned list would be preferable, revert the category change here and I'll move some of my additions to Goth to that list (or a different one, if you can think of a better name); otherwise I'll leave it — I don't really have much preference either way, and I would rather not create a somewhat debatable list without at least one person agreeing ;-). Created List of non-goth musical artists popular within goth subculture. Further discussion should probably take place on Category_talk:Goth. - Korpios 02:04, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)

as i understand it... most of what goths listen to is not actually filed under the catagory of goth music. i will inquire with some others i know who should know better then i know.
