Tagesschau on ARD
In Germany, the Tagesschau is both the oldest and highest rated current affairs show on television. The first show was on December 26, 1952 and at first it was only broadcast three times per week on NWDR (Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk). Starting in 1956 it was shown from Monday to Saturday, and since 1961 it can be seen every day. The Tagesschau has an approximate daily audience of 10 million viewers, which is equivalent to ratings of around 33 %. Today it is produced by the NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk) in Hamburg.
The most popular edition of the show is broadcast every day at 20:00. The other show times vary, but commonly other, shorter editions are shown at 15:00 and at 17:00. In 1971 the late edition of the Tagesschau was replaced by the Tagesthemen ("Subjects of the Day"). At about 00:30, the Nachtmagazin ("Night Magazine") is broadcast, offering a version of the Tagesschau expanded by more detailed analysis.
In addition to the Tagesschau, the ARD expanded the range of its news shows to include the Tagesthemen ("Subjects of the Day") and the Wochenspiegel ("Mirror of the Week").
