TAE (Telekommunikations-Anschluss-Einheit) is the German standard for telephone plugs and sockets. There are two types F (for telephones) and N (for other devices such as answering machines and modems). This system has been introduces in the beginning of the 1990s when the government-owned institution Deutsche Bundespost (DBP, German Federal Post) has been split into Deutsche Post (postal service), Deutsche Telekom (telecomunication services) and Postbank (financal services). Before this the telephones has been fixed wired connected at the outlets. Also only officially approved telephones (by law only allowed to be distributed by the DBP) were allowed to be connected to the telephone system. Furthermore telephones and other communication devices were only allowed to be leased by the DBP and not sold by DBP or on the free market.
