Swedish hip hop
|
Swedish hip hop is a subgenre of hip hop.
Swedish hip hop has its roots in Stockholm and Malmö in the middle 1980s. Swedish rap crews and artists usually rap in Swedish, English, or a mix of both.
The only hip-hop/rap magazine in Sweden was, Gidappa, which stopped publication in early 2004. Other Swedish magazines revolving around hip-hop culture are UP and Kingsize.
The break-through for Swedish hip-hop occurred in 1998-1999 with Petter and, later on Ken, Blues, all of whom rapped in Swedish. However, the first big commercial hip-hop act in Sweden was Just D, although many classified their work as pop. The Latin Kings was also one of the early big acts on the scene. Early Underground acts were Broadcaster D with One Eye Que (now known as Ayo), ADL and Feven. Later on ADL and Feven broke through commercially.
But those who represented Swedish hip hop since Day One (around 1983-84) and "started" hip-hop in Sweden include Per Cussion together with Grandmaster Funk. Afterwards, there were Rock Ski (Dele Shekoni), Almighty T (Tony Laurent), Mike C (Micke Janson), Abdula (Krister Guvenius), Scarcrow (Peder Erikson), Shy 814 (Marcin Wikström), Danne Malmer, Kasper Blom, Nico Cleyndert and MC II Fresh. Some of those mentioned above formed another rap crew, Ice Cold Rockers.
The Latin Kings and Petter, however, can be attributed to making Sweden's hip-hop scene internationally recognisable, in the mid-to-late 1990s.
As of April 2005, the most popular hip-hop act in Sweden (disputably) is Timbuktu.
