Susan McMaster

Susan McMaster is a Canadian poet, literary editor, and spoken word performer who lives in Ottawa, Ontario.
Susan McMaster's recent book, Waging Peace, collects the poetry, art, and texts from Convergence: Poems for Peace, which presented art-wrapped poems from across Canada to all MPs and Senators in 2001. She's published poetry books, wordmusic, performance poetry recordings, and scripts; edited collections and series; founded Vernissage, the magazine of the National Gallery of Canada, and the national feminist magazine Branching Out (1973-); and was an original member of the intermedia group First Draft, (1981-), with members including Andrew McClure and Colin Morton.
Since 1996, she has been the wordsmith in Geode Music & Poetry (formerly SugarBeat), recording two spoken word and music CDs with Jennifer Giles on keyboards, Alrick Huebener on bass, and friends including Penn Kemp, Dave Broscoe, Jamie Gullikson, Mike Essoudry, Petr Cancura, and John Higney, and performing at 50-plus venues including the National Library, Kingston Fringe Jazz Festival, Rasputin's, Blue Skies Music Festival, Ottawa Folk Festival, Elora Music Festival, Artscape, and Ottawa International Writers Festival.
Susan works six months each year as an editor of art catalogues for the National Gallery of Canada. She is a member of the League of Canadian Poets, PEN (Canada), the Writers' Trust, SOCAN, Access copyright, the Musician's Union, the Ottawa Independent Writers and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Her new poetry collection is forthcoming from Black Moss Press in 2004, as is her next spoken word CD with Geode.
