Defined its genre and caused a boom of fighting games; The original Street Fighter II had many updates. |
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991) was a highly popular and immensely successful fighting game created by Capcom. It centers around two characters, Ryu and Ken (the two main characters from the original Street Fighter), facing the evil villain M. Bison (Vega in the Japanese version).
Today, Street Fighter II is routinely listed as one of the greatest video games of all time. It is widely considered to be the "Grandfather" of the fighting game genre, and is still considered by many purists to be the finest example of the genre, relying more on control and playability than graphics or flash, unlike subsequent fighting games such as Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. In particular the control system was often emulated by later games, including other Capcom fighters (see below).
Karate Champ and Street Fighter, two one-on-one fighting games which preceded Street Fighter II, are now largely forgotten.
The game featured a line up of 8 characters which a player could choose from to battle from all the other fighters around the world. Once the other characters had been defeated, four boss characters could be battled, finishing off with M. Bison.

Legacy
This popular fighting game inspired several updates of the game which are not thought of as 'true sequels':
- Street Fighter II: Champion Edition - this version allowed the four boss characters to be selectable by the player. It also was the first fighting game to have same character matches.
- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting - Turbo was released in response to modified bootlegs of Champion Edition. It speeded up the game, as well as included some new fighting moves for the characters.
- Super Street Fighter II - this introduced four new characters, and updated the sound and graphics.
- Super Street Fighter II Turbo - a slightly updated version of Super Street Fighter II. It featured enhanced speed and difficulty, while still applying the gameplay and characters from Super Street Fighter II. It was also the first game in the series to have a super combo gauge & introduced Akuma.
- Hyper Street Fighter II - a somewhat confusingly-named game that was released on Street Fighter: The Anniversary Collection. This game allows characters to fight as they did in the Street Fighter II series. For example, in 'NORMAL' mode, a character fights and behaves as they did in the original SFII, while 'SUPER' mode allows the character to fight and behave as they did in Super Turbo.
- Numerous unauthorized versions such as Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (Lightning Edition).
Many of Capcom's later series of fighting games were based on (and included characters from) the Street Fighter series:
- Street Fighter Alpha series
- Street Fighter EX series
- Marvel vs. Capcom series
- Capcom vs SNK series.
Capcom received much criticism from fans for continually releasing yet another re-hash of a Street Fighter II. A common joke was that "Capcom can't count to three." In 1997, a true sequel was released in the form of Street Fighter III.
Many of these were both arcade and console hits.
Characters
The characters in Street Fighter II were all associated with different nations around the world, although some nations had more than one representative.
Original Eight
These were the eight World Warriors available in the original Street Fighter II.
- Blanka - Brazil
- Chun-Li - China
- Dhalsim - India
- E. Honda - Japan
- Guile - United States
- Ken - United States (returns from Street Fighter)
- Ryu - Japan (returns from Street Fighter)
- Zangief - former Soviet Union
Bosses
These four characters (listed in order faced) were only encountered after defeating the other normal fighters. They were not playable characters in the original Street Fighter II, but they have been playable from Champion Edition onward. Three of the four characters had their names changed for the American version, see individual entries for the explanation.
- Balrog - United States (M. Bison in Japan)
- Vega - Spain (Balrog in Japan)
- Sagat - Thailand (returns from Street Fighter)
- M. Bison - Thailand (Vega in Japan)
Super Street Fighter II
These four new characters were introduced in Super Street Fighter II.
Akuma
- Akuma (Gouki in Japan), first appeared in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. He was not given a country of origin. Akuma is a secret character in the game, and is only playable via a secret code.
Other Media
Street Fighter II was adapted into two different films in 1994, an animated movie in Japan (later released as Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie in the U.S.) and an American-produced live-action film, Street Fighter. The animated movie is more popular with fans than the live action film.
There was also a US Street Fighter cartoon, and a anime titled Street Fighter II V.
