Stephan's Quintet
|
Stephan's Quintet is a visual grouping of five galaxies, composed of:
- the Hickson Compact Group 92: a group of four interacting galaxies some 300 million light years away from the Milky Way Galaxy
- NGC 7320, a closer galaxy estimated to be about 40 million light years away (top-center in image at right)
NGC 7320 is shown to have extensive H II regions, identified as red blobs, where active star formation is occurring. The group was discovered by Édouard Stephan in 1877 at Marseilles Observatory.
