Stanley Kowalski is a character in Tennessee Williams's play A Streetcar Named Desire.
His character is the main protagonist in the play and his dislike for his wife's sister eventually leads to an offstage implied rape, leading Blanche Dubois to be ceritified insane for reporting this incident.
Early performances of the play featured Marlon Brando in the lead role. His performance in the role was noted for his ability to get the audience to empathise with him, thus implicating them in his guilt later in the play.
