A metro line starts at De Akkers station, proceeds to Heemraadslaan station and Spijkenisse Centrum station, then to Hoogvliet (mun. Rotterdam), where it splits into:
- the Caland Line to Pernis (mun. Rotterdam), Schiedam, Rotterdam, where it splits again and one branch goes to Capelle aan den IJssel;

Connections with the main railway system are at Schiedam Centrum station (Caland Line) and at Rotterdam Centraal station (Erasmus Line). To and from the direction The Hague the fastest connection is with the Caland Line, even though not all trains of the main railway stop at Schiedam; to and from the directions Utrecht and Dordrecht it varies which connection happens to be faster, but taking the Caland Line usually requires changing trains one time less.
