Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,509 km² (583 mi²). 1,504 km² (581 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,334 people, 5,940 households, and 3,938 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 6,559 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.93% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 2.90% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 4.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,940 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 6.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.70% are non-families. 30.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.92.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 21.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males.
