Wexford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 30,484. Its county seat is Cadillac6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,491 km² (576 mi²). 1,465 km² (565 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.80% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 30,484 people, 11,824 households, and 8,383 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (54/mi²). There are 14,872 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.29% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,824 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,363, and the median income for a family is $39,915. Males have a median income of $31,198 versus $21,733 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,144. 10.30% of the population and 7.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.50% of those under the age of 18 and 8.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
