Official parties in North Korea
North Korea is a single-party state. This means that only one political party, the Workers Party of Korea is legally allowed to hold effective power. Although minor parties are allowed, they are legally required to accept the leadership of the dominant party. North Korean politics works therefore on the united front principle common in communist countries. The North Korean front is called the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland. It consists of the following official political parties:
- Workers Party of Korea (Chõson Nodongdang, also translated as Workers' Party of Korea and Korean Workers Party)
- Korean Social Democratic Party (Chõson Sahoeminjudang)
- Chondoist Chongu Party (Ch'ondogyo Ch'ong-u-dang)
North Korean opposition parties
There are currently no known organized opposition in North Korea that is independently verifiable. However, there are exiled dissident groups, spread out around the world, that are against the authoritarian regime that is in place.
Exiled and informal parties include the Liberal Democrats and the Korean Greens.
