Northampton County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 13,093. Its county seat is Eastville6.
Northampton and Accomack Counties comprise the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,060 km² (795 mi²). 537 km² (207 mi²) of it is land and 1,523 km² (588 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 73.93% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,093 people, 5,321 households, and 3,543 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (63/mi²). There are 6,547 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 53.29% White, 43.03% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.12% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 3.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,321 households out of which 25.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.30% are married couples living together, 17.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 29.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 21.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 87.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.10 males.
