The stories are themed around the idea of 'new gods' or how old gods die and new objects of worship are called into being.
The book includes a 1973 introduction and a stern 'Caveat Lector' page advising the reader against enjoying the volume in one sitting.
The title of the book comes from 'Deathbird', the nineteenth story in the collection.
