The Appalachian League is a minor league baseball league which operates in the Virginia and Tennessee region. It is a Rookie League, whose players are almost exclusively newly signed to professional contracts. The league's season starts in June, after major-league teams have signed players that they selected in the annual amateur draft, and ends in September.
The Appalachian League began in 1911, with six teams in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The league folded in 1914. It was reformed in 1921, but closed and re-opened several times before becoming established in 1957. The league is divided into an East Division and a West Division.
