South Hadley is a town located in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 17,196. It is home to Mount Holyoke College.
History
South Hadley was first settled in 1659 and was officially incorporated in 1775.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 47.6 km² (18.4 mi²). 45.9 km² (17.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.70% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,196 people, 6,586 households, and 4,208 families residing in the town. The population density is 374.9/km² (971.0/mi²). There are 6,784 housing units at an average density of 147.9/km² (383.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.05% White, 1.20% African American, 0.12% Native American, 2.53% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 2.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,586 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the town the population is spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 14.9% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 72.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 65.8 males.
