Solo (music)
|
In music, solo means to play alone. This does not necessarily mean that no one else is playing at that time, only that the soloist's part is the most prominent. In jazz it is common for each player to improvise a solo in turn, while others continue to play but more quietly. In dance, the soloist dances in show without partner. In the Comparsas, there are various soloists who strut in front, they usually dance at the edges of the street so the viewing public can appreciate their moves. Most male soloists carry a large lantern-like artifact on a large pole, resting on an oily pouch, which they make spin at will. Females are probably the most energetic dancers in from of Conparsas, for they are expected to do a lot of grooving.
A related term is soli, which means that a whole section of a musical ensemble is playing the same thing at the same time.
