Smite
|
The word smite (German: Schmiss [m.]) refers to the wound and the resulting scar when a fencer gets hurt during a Mensur.
Because there's always the risk to get hurt during a Mensur, there's always at least one doctor present. The wound gets sewn up rather crudely, as to provoke some scarification. The reason is that among students engaging in the Mensur, a Schmiss is seen as a badge of honour.
If the smite is too severe to continue, the doctor can decide to abort the fight.
The word smite also refers to any striking with a blunt object, particularly one charged as holy or unholy (i.e., smiting the infidels).
