Shibuya-kei
|
Shibuya-kei (Shibuya style) is a label initially applied to music that sold well in the Shibuya district of Tokyo in spite of having little mass-marketing and support. Initially, the term was applied to Flipper's Guitar, Pizzicato Five, and Schar Dara Parr, and the music produced by these bands was notable for being strongly influenced by little-known non-Japanese music (various European pop, lounge, and hip-hop respectively). By the end of the 90s, the term was applied to many bands (such as Puffy) as the music innovated by these bands became more mainstream.
Notable artists include:
- Buffalo Daughter
- Cibo Matto
- Cornelius
- Cymbals
- Fantastic Plastic Machine
- Flipper's Guitar
- Kahimi Karie
- Miniflex
- Momus (musician)
- Pizzicato Five
- Schar Dara Parr
- Takako Minekawa
