Shannon (born 1958 as Brenda Shannon Greene), is well known for her 1983 smash disco/dance record, "Let The Music Play". The record redefined the electro funk sound that Arthur Baker and John Robie (who produced IOU by Freeze and One More Shot/Get Wet by C-Bank) developed in 1982.
Summary
In 1983 Let The Music Play was produced by Chris Barbosa, a Puerto Rican from New York. It is well known as the first freestyle track, with a heavy syncopated drum sound with Latin American rhythms that wasn't so electro as the sound a year ago. Her follow up single in 1984 was "Give Me Tonight," a record that also went up on the Billboard Dance Charts. That same year she released her debut album "Let The Music Play." This also was considered the first freestlye album in history. In 1985 Shannon released her sophomore album "Do You Wanna Get Away," with a sound similar to her previous album. She scored three more dance music hits but by 1986 her thrid album "Love Goes All The Way" was an utter failure. Her records received heavy airplay on Hot 97 in New York. She did not earn the title, "Queen of Freestyle" as it eventually went to Judy Torres because she only released 3 albums then.
In 2000 Shannon released her fourth studio album, "The Best Is Yet To Come," her first album in fifteen years. Chris Barbosa was invited back as a producer and updated her 1980's hits with a similar sound. Many notable producers, including Andy Panda and Tony Moran were featured on her album.
